Toddler Program

This classroom is for children 1 to 3 years of age. Staff to child ratio is usually 1 to 5. The toddler classroom is a room full of large and small motor activities and spaces to explore. The classroom is equipped with toys designed to support the natural developmental stages of exploration, movement, language acquisition, and the sense of order in the child's environment. Materials that aid in the growth of large and small motor abilities are arranged on low shelves, available to the children. Experienced teachers facilitate the children's participation in age-appropriate "Practical Life" activities. Toilet learning is approached with patience and care, following the signs that the child is ready for each new step toward independence in this life skill. Outside time is included when the weather is not excessively hot, cold, or otherwise unsuitable for young children. The toddler playground has sandboxes, climbing equipment, and outdoor toys. After-nap activities include music, movement, and art, as well as access to all the developmental materials on the shelves.

Lunch is a group meal, prepared at the school.  Morning and afternoon snacks are available whenever each child is hungry. A daily report is provided by the caregivers, and enables parents to communicate changes at home, or make requests to the staff.

Pre-Primary Program

This classroom is for children 3 to 6 years of age. Staff to child ratio is usually 1 to 10. The curriculum consists of a complete Montessori program and is taught by trained Montessori teachers. The materials are available on low shelves, including exercises in Practical Life, the refinement of the senses, written and oral language, geography, science, and number skills. The lessons are individualized, and include small group lessons. Emphasis is on developing concentration, independence, and responsible group membership. The morning program includes outdoor time as weather permits, and snack when each child wishes to eat it.

Following lunch and naptime (optional), the afternoon program includes choices in the Montessori curriculum plus music, art, and cultural experiences from around the world.  [Top of Page]

Lower Elementary Program

This classroom is for children 6 to 9 years of age. Some of the learning materials in the Montessori Elementary classroom are extensions of the materials used in the Pre-Primary classroom. The same math hierarchy materials are used to multiply and divide by more than one digit. Also, new materials are introduced to help students make the transition from concrete representation of concepts to abstract representation on paper. They do this at their own pace and by following their strongest interests.

The Montessori certified teacher can translate any student's personal interest into all the curriculum areas. An interest in an animal can lead to biology, habitat, country research, math, geography, handwriting, grammar, literature, history, and art. The Lower Elementary classroom is permeated with cultural research and writing experiences. Students use weekly work plans to ensure a balanced curriculum and to help them learn time management.  [Top of Page]

Both cooperative learning and individualized lessons are utilized. Emphasis is on greater language skills, independent learning, and responsible group membership, including conflict resolution skills. Spanish is taught as a spoken and written language.  [Top of Page]
